Vacuum

It is an ongoing cooperative project "Vacuum", collaborates with artist Peiran Wang.

We take the fractured experience of women's lives and look at the fairy tale The Little Mermaid as a prototype for this experience, developing a range of creations such as performances, photographs, poems, artists' books and more.

It explores the question of identity between non-human creatures and queer feminism and aims to build narrative rights and identity subjectivity for women through collective research and co-creation.

The mermaid is internalized as a symbol self-image, and her story also becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Facing disillusionment and death on the last night of the world, she seems to be trapped in time. Co-work with Wenjun (an artist and curator focusing on feminism practice), we take the whole as a monologue in which the text is the script, and the image is the storyboard. Texts present her chaotic thoughts, and images visualize her emotions with colors and special effects. We changed the visual metaphor of a sharp knife into a torch. It is a weakening of binary opposition and an implication of self-consciousness awakening. We believe that her sacrifice is for a greater love rather than merely romantic love.
